Virtual Interviewing 101

Did you just get your first skype interview? Are you rushing to find ways to prepare? Talking to someone you have never met through your computer can be a little nerve-racking but here are some tips to help.

Setup your Webcams
We live in a new age and time! Virtual interviews are not uncommon, especially if you are seeking employment in a remote area. Webcams are inexpensive and allow you to have a conversation in the comfort of your home. For those of us who have no experience in this field, there is no reason to be worried! These tips will have you feeling better than ever!

Dress Up Like You Are Going to A Regular Interview
Yes, it is a virtual interview, but it is still professional. Dress in your best business professional attire and leave the makeup to a minimum. Dressing like this helps build your confidence. It helps you feel as if you are in a professional setting and in an actual interview room.

Watch Your Hand Gestures
This step is easier since you can see yourself in the camera. Make sure to keep your hands off the table and away from your face. When you are answering questions, make sure your hands are not doing all the talking for you. Overusing your hands can distract the interviewer. Sit up upright and keep your back straight.

Setting/ Signal/Lightening
Before your interview chose a place where you feel comfortable and will have no distractions. Make sure the surrounding areas around you are neat and tidy because the camera will catch these areas. It is important to check your signal and make sure your lighting is good. You want the interviewer to see you and not a blurry screen.

Though this is virtual, it is still an interview. Do not forget to prepare and create questions to ask at the end. Remember your strengths and weaknesses, what you can bring to the table, and what separates you from the next candidates.

Though this may be nerve-racking remember to smile! Let the interviewer know that you are welcoming and excited about the interview! This helps break the ice and makes you more comfortable.

Be sure to study and find out as much as you can about the company, apply these tips, and you are sure to make a lasting impression.
